Wrap-Ups

LEARNING WRAP-UPS

Why Students Should Know Basic Facts:

NCTM Standards:
To solve and interpret the problems that occur in our world, the NCTM recognizes that children must foster a solid understanding of, and proficiency with simple calculations. Knowledge of these basic facts is the foundation for proficiency in mental math and estimation.

There are four specific reasons for knowing the basic facts:
1. It has considerable social utility.
2. It facilitates learning of related topics.
3. Students understand meaning and significance of arithmetic operations.
4. It facilitates an exploration of various topics, generalizations from data, recognition of generalizations.

First, students must understand the CONCEPT!
Second, students MEMORIZE the facts! (And that is where Learning Wrap-ups come into play).

With their new attached string, they still offer a fun and unique way to help students memorize their math facts. Students wrap the string from the problem on the left to the answer on the right, then turn the Wrap-up over to see if they got it right. Utilizing multiple learning senses, Wrap-ups are perhaps the best product ever for immediate recall of basic facts.

WHAT EDUCATORS HAVE SAID ABOUT WRAP-UPS:

My students have used Wrap-ups individually, in pairs, and as a total group. They are the first thing chosen when there is free time.

For those children who had a problem manipulating the string, we found that after several tries they were able to achieve success, and were soon able to relax and work on computation. Although these children worked slower, the fact that they were able to overcome the manipulative problem, begin computation and improve made this a positive learning experience.

Perhaps most importantly, every child I observed me with success. For those who knew their facts, greater speed became the goal. For those who needed more time, the fact that some improvement was obtained mad them eager to learn.

My first grade loves them. As a teacher, I think that Wrap-ups are marvelous for the development of small motor skills, and each child can pursue a goal at their own pace. The six children in my class who needed a little extra help (learning to use the Wrap-ups) were the ones who were the most delighted with themselves at feeling the success of mastery.

My aide and I are astounded ? we work with children in Chapter 1 and we physically have to stop our students from playing with Wrap-ups when their 30 minutes in our class is over and they have to return to class. We can¹t wait to see the results of the CTBS tests in April. Thanks for a great product.

Wrap-ups have helped our students. Master basic facts, recognize number families, improve eye-hand coordination, use free time purposefully, participate in valuable competition, set goals and work toward them.

Wrap-ups have changed our student's attitude toward math.
